As I high school senior, I was assigned to write a paper about the career I desired. Unsure of my future direction, I wrote on the career I knew I did not want – that of an English teacher – and promptly received an A plus! I have to smile as I remember that paper and the joy I have had teaching students for 20 years now. My senior English teacher offered me a job 5 years later.
Teaching English is a great excuse to read more, discuss more, think more, and write more. Jesus taught His disciples through parables or stories. I believe there is great value in storytelling, discerning the messages in what we read, and in communicating through writing. Writing is power; I enjoy helping students find their voice and grow in effective writing.
I have taught in public, private Christian, adult education, and homeschooling settings. I am a firm believer in lifetime learning, that ideas have consequences, and that the students learn most who work the hardest. I enjoy lively class discussions and laughter.
On a personal level, I have been married to Frank Pugh for 22 years. We have 3 dear sons (ages 20, 18, and 16) and a dear daughter (age 13) who have taught me more than they know. In my free time, you may find me gardening, journaling, cooking for a crowd, or traveling. It is a privilege to teach at Covenant Learning Co-op this year.
