English 1
Course Description
Writing, Grammar and Literature are an important part of your students education. It is our desire as a co-op to put your child in the class that best suits their education and training to date. There are 4 English classes designed to give your student an strong foundation on grammar, writing, vocabulary, and literature.
In English 1 your student will learn or review the 8 parts of speech. Students will learn to identify each part of speech, punctuation, possessives, irregular verbs, subject verb agreement and other grammatical concepts. In writing your student will concentrate on writing different kinds of paragraphs: descriptive, informative, and persuasive. They will learn how to revise and add in specific content based on a checklist that they will become familiar with. Finally, your student will read literature and be asked to answer comprehension questions concerning the content. Additionally they will learn literary concepts such as plot, antagonist, protagonist, etc.
English classes since they cover so many different areas will require a significant amount of time each day. At CLC we consider this class a 2 credit class and your student can anticipate spending 1 1/2 - 2 hours each day on homestudy depending on their reading skill and writing ability. Some very slow readers may spend even more time on the class.
After English 1, students progress to English 2, English 3, and English 4. In the future we hope to have an English and British Literature class and AP English.
